To SWYPE, Or Not To SWYPE

How many of you bought the new iPhone 4 this week? If so, congratulations. I personally decided to go a different direction this time around. Being that T-Mobile doesn't support the iPhone, I chose to buy the Motorola Cliq XT. Besides the fact that the Android OS is open source and super easy to use, the true selling point for me was SWYPE technology. What is SWYPE you ask? SWYPE is a new technology for faster typing on your cell phone. When I say "typing" I mean dragging your finger across the digital keyboard to spell out words. SWYPE was created from the same person who introduced T9, Cliff Kushler. T9 is a predictive text technology allowing you to type faster and more efficiently.

Cliff Kushler had created a great product with the T9 technology. But in my opinion, I believe he has really had a breakthrough with SWYPE. Cell phones with actual keyboards are starting to become a thing of the past. People want phones that are sleek and fit in your pocket. We are moving in a direction of the smart phone. Smart phone = smart software. That's exactly why SWYPE is here to stay. Check out this video of Franklin Page using SWYPE to break the Guinness World Record for fastest text message.

Why is SWYPE such a great technology? First and foremost, it's the fastest way to text right now, as the video above shows. It makes sending emails updates from your phone a fun and easy task. Long gone are the days when typing out a paragraph took 5 minutes to accomplish. We are in an age now where Facebook and Twitter are two of the biggest social media sites. So having a technology like SWYPE allows us to quickly and accurately relay our message out to our friends and followers. I also believe that SWYPE allows our phones to be smaller in size because the actual keyboard is no longer needed. Thus, freeing up space for bigger processors and better cameras.

As I stated in the first paragraph, the iPhone 4 was released this week. If you were to buy a phone simply because of its keyboard, which one would you choose? I would easily choose the iPhone if it were on a different network and if SWYPE was available. Is SWYPE a technology that you would be willing to learn?
